Over time, industrialization, scientific breakthroughs, discovery of mineral resources and the likes have been responsible for increased shift of attention from the original source of livelihood man came to know from creation. Being the oldest sector of mankind’s sustenance, government with very sensitive leaders at the helm are wise enough to recognize the irreplaceable role agriculture plays in the sustenance and survival of mankind.
Yearly, every region of the world sees an increase in population and with it diverse new challenges. It is therefore expedient that conscious efforts and innovations are put in place to ensure sustained development of the agricultural sector.
Senator Jarigbe Agom as a lawmaker has clearly recognized the important role of agriculture in societal development and one can see from his strides which is laser focused on increasing food productivity in Cross River North Senatorial District.
Ordinarily, one would believe that Agro development would not be a top priority of a lawmaker. Thankfully, this is not the case, as it is clear that his years in the National Assembly has been making huge strides to improve the agricultural sector in the Senatorial District, by investing finance, providing empowerment to constituents, encouraging self sustainability and wealth creation even in rural areas.
Jarigbe is constantly empowering farmers with financial aids and providing farms machineries that support agricultural development in the Senatorial District. Machines such as, Tractors, Thrillers, Tricycles, Grinding Machines, Tillers, etc are being given to farmers to help boost productivity both on a subsistence and commercial scales.
The lawmaker has been consistent in the distribution of farm inputs such as fertilizers and other agro chemicals in a bid to ensure food sufficiency and increased productivity.
It is clear that Senator Jarigbe’s leadership is determined to achieve food sufficiency and economic diversification and he is clearly doing everything within his reach to bring stakeholders into play to make this happen, more so as he has facilitated viable funding options with the help of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to help farmers, some who have ventured into livestock farming and other forms of animal husbandry such as Cattle Rearing, etc.
Conclusively, his bill which seeks the establishment of a Federal College of Agriculture Ogoja, will also herald Agricultural Education, Training, Research and Development, which will have direct impact on poverty reduction by also increasing farm productivity, subsequent increase in food supply, creating employment opportunities for both skilled and unskilled labour, and reducing the cost of food crops due to availability in Cross River North.
