Over 1,400 South Africans have signed a petition to kick out 23-year-old Chidimma Vanessa Onwe Adetshina from the ongoing Miss South Africa beauty pageant due to her Nigerian heritage.
Adetshina was born in Soweto to a Nigeria father and a South African woman of Mozambican descent.
The Cape Town-based law student is one of the top 13 beauty contestants who remain in the running for the Miss SA 2024 crown.
The petition to kick her out of the competition gained traction after Adetshina removed Nigerian and Mozambican flags from her TikTok profile earlier this week.
Additionally, there is controversy surrounding her status as a divorced mother, though Miss SA’s rules, updated in 2022, now allow divorced and married women to compete.
Meanwhile, the Miss South Africa pageant has said she meets their criteria as she has a valid South African ID.
